Industry news

From 50%-90% of energy consumed in a typical wastewater treatment plant is used for aeration blowers. Often times much of this energy is wasted because the Dissolved Oxygen content of the water is much higher than is needed for proper treatment. For most operations, only a Dissolved Oxygen level of 1.5 -2.0 is needed.
Some aeration systems have the capability to reduce oxygen through the use of modulating intake valves, others cannot limit the air flow at all. Installing VFDs on centrifugal blowers can greatly reduce the air pumped and hence the energy consumed.

Featured HOA Project

If you use or are considering Variable Frequency Drives for your well or high service pumps, then you may want to consider Optimate®. This patent pending technology automatically determines the optimum speed to run your pump based on gallons pumped per kilowatt consumed. The energy saving could be quite significant, especially if you are paying a demand charge.

The data collected has shown an average savings of about 17% in energy consumption and over 40% savings in demand charge. The exact savings that can be realized depend on a number of factors. If you aren’t already using VFDs, there are many benefits that can be realized with VFDs alone. When combining them with Optimate®, the payback can approach 2 years or less.

Contact HOA Solutions for VFDs and Optimate® products, or if you are interested in using Optimate® on an existing VFD.

Module One: Employee Development Initiatives

We at HOA believe that leadership is not necessarily inherent. We believe that it can be learned and developed. That being the case, we have adopted the philosophy that all of our employees are leaders in some capacity and as such they need training in becoming effective leaders. To best understand the development of leadership, it is necessary to see where leadership comes from. It comes from three places: 1) tradition 2) position 3) Charisma. It is not hard to find examples of where leaders come from families of leaders: The Kennedy family and The Bush family. Both of these families have long lines of leadership. It is also not hard to recognize that people in positions of leadership become leaders: CEO’s of organizations fall into this category of leadership. And last but not least there is the charismatic leadership. Since not any of us come from the families of leaders and few of us are CEOs, it is this place that we focus on where leadership arises. We firmly believe that we can develop leadership in our organization through training and that is why we devote considerable time and effort in providing leadership training to our employees. We do it with all of them from the top to the bottom and across all spectrums of our organization. In our next segment watch for what we feel makes up charismatic leadership.

Joke of the month

A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a check-up, the doctor tells them that they’re physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember. Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair.

‘Want anything while I’m in the kitchen?’ he asks
‘Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?’
‘Don’t you think you should write it down so you can remember it?’ she asks.
‘No, I can remember it.’
‘Well, I’d like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?’
He says, ‘I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.’
‘I’d also like whipped cream. I’m certain you’ll forget that, write it down?’ she asks

Irritated, he says, ‘I don’t need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream – I got it, for goodness sake!’

Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment.

‘Where’s my toast?’
